Rule 1: Light the Object, Hide the Source
The golden rule of landscape lighting: you should see the effect, never the fixture. Light washing a brick wall — beautiful. A glowing bulb glaring at you from the mulch — terrible. Every fixture gets hidden, shielded, or aimed so the source disappears. If you can see the bulb, the design failed.
Rule 2: Layer, Don't Blast
Great lighting has layers: a soft wash on the facade, accent light on the tree, path lights guiding the walk, a glow from the patio. Each layer is gentle on its own; together they compose a scene. The amateur move is one brightness everywhere — flat, harsh, boring. Think in layers and the yard gains depth.
Rule 3: Warm Light for Homes
2700K–3000K. Warm white. Always, for residential work. It flatters brick, stone, wood, and skin tones. Cool white belongs in parking lots, not backyards. This one rule eliminates half of all bad landscape lighting.
Rule 4: Less Is More
The most common DIY mistake is too many fixtures. Twelve path lights where six would do. Every tree lit instead of the best two. Restraint creates contrast — and contrast is what makes lighting dramatic. Dark areas make the lit areas sing.
Rule 5: Aim at Night
Fixtures placed by day are guesses. The pros come back after dark and adjust every fixture by eye — a few degrees of aim is the difference between "nice" and "stunning." If your contractor does not night-aim, you did not get a design; you got an installation.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
The runway: path lights in a straight line, evenly spaced, all the same — looks like an airport. Stagger them, vary the spacing, let the light pools overlap.
The flood: one giant floodlight washing the whole yard. Harsh, flat, and a gift to the neighbors' bedrooms. Replace with layered accents.
The color clash: mixing warm and cool bulbs across the yard. Pick one temperature and commit.
The light trespass: fixtures aimed at the street or the neighbor's windows. Aim everything at your own property, shield the rest.
Want It Done Right?
These principles are what our design process is built on — including the night demo, where you see the design in your own yard before committing.
