What Is a Zone?
A zone is a group of fixtures controlled together. Instead of every light in the yard doing the same thing, zones let different areas behave differently: the facade glows every evening, the patio lights only when you are out there, the path lights stay on till dawn, the tree accents shut off at midnight. Same yard, completely different capabilities.
Typical Zones on an Arlington Home
Facade and entry. The home's face — on every evening, dusk to late. This is the curb-appeal zone.
Paths and driveway. Safety lighting — often dusk to dawn, so late arrivals always have guidance.
Trees and accents. The drama layer — on for the evening show, off around midnight when nobody is watching.
Patio and deck. The living zone — on when you are outside, off when you are not. Often dimmable for mood.
Garden beds. The backdrop — evening hours, adding depth behind the main scenes.
Security. Motion-triggered — bright when someone approaches, quiet otherwise.
Zones Enable Scenes
A scene is a preset combination of zones. "Welcome home": everything on. "Dinner on the patio": patio warm and bright, rest low. "Late night": paths only. "Away": everything on a natural-looking schedule. With smart controls, scenes are one tap — or fully automatic.
Planning Zones in the Design
Zones are decided during the design, not after install — because each zone needs its own wire run back to the transformer. This is why design-first matters: a fixture added later can join an existing zone, but creating a new zone later means new wire. We plan zones for how you actually live, with room for how you might live later.
