Set It and Forget It
The best lighting system is the one you never think about. The lights come on at dusk by themselves. The path lights shut off at midnight. The patio zone stays on late on weekends. You are on vacation and the house still glows every evening like someone is home. That is what good controls do — they make the system feel automatic, because it is.
Control Options
Photocell (dusk-to-dawn). A small sensor tells the system when the sun goes down and brings the lights on — and off at sunrise. It adjusts itself as the days get longer and shorter. Simple, reliable, and included in most of our systems.
Astronomical timers. A timer that knows your location and the date, so it turns lights on at local sunset without a sensor. Set schedules per zone: everything on at dusk, accent lights off at 11, path lights till dawn.
Phone app control. The modern standard. An app on your phone controls every zone: on, off, dim, schedules, vacation mode. Sitting on the couch and want the patio brighter? Slide it up. We set it up and walk you through it before we leave.
Motion sensors. For security zones: lights that jump to full brightness when someone approaches, then settle back. Great for driveways, side gates, and back doors.
Zones: The Secret to Great Control
A zone is a group of fixtures controlled together. A typical home has four to six: front facade, paths, backyard accents, deck/patio, security, and trees. Each zone gets its own schedule and brightness. The magic is in the combinations — "entertaining" mode (patio bright, rest low), "away" mode (everything on a natural-looking schedule), "late night" (paths only). We design the zones during your lighting design and label everything clearly at the transformer.
What About Power Outages and Changes
Modern digital timers and smart controllers remember their settings through outages — no reprogramming after every storm. And when your needs change (new patio, kids grown, different schedule), we can re-zone and reprogram in one visit. The system grows with you.
Retrofitting Controls to an Old System
Have an existing lighting system with a clunky old mechanical timer? We can usually upgrade just the controls — new transformer with built-in smart control, or a smart module on your existing setup — without replacing every fixture. See our maintenance and retrofit page.

Choosing the Right Control for Your Life
Not everyone needs an app. The right control system matches how you actually live. If you want zero involvement, a photocell with an astronomical timer is perfect — the system runs itself for years and you never touch it. If you like tweaking, app control gives you zones, scenes, and dimming from the couch. If you travel, smart control with away-mode scheduling is worth every penny. During the consultation we ask about your habits and recommend accordingly — never upselling technology you will not use.
The good news: you are not locked in forever. A photocell system can gain app control later with a controller upgrade. Start simple, add smarts when you want them. The wiring and zones we install today support whatever control you choose tomorrow.
Scenes: The Fun Part
Scenes are where smart lighting gets delightful. A scene is a one-tap preset: 'Welcome Home' brings everything up as you pull in. 'Dinner' dims the patio warm and drops the rest low. 'Party' lights the whole property. 'Goodnight' leaves only the path lights. 'Away' runs a natural-looking lived-in schedule while you travel. You can trigger scenes from the app, from a schedule, or automatically — geofencing can fire 'Welcome Home' as your phone approaches the house.
We set up your first scenes during installation and teach you to make your own. Most clients end up with three or four they use constantly — and wonder how they lived with a single on-off switch.
How It Works: Our Process
Step 1 — Needs conversation. We talk through your habits — schedules, travel, entertaining, tech comfort — and recommend the control level that fits.
Step 2 — System design. Zones, scenes, and schedules planned alongside your lighting design, with the controller and any app setup in your itemized proposal.
Step 3 — Installation and setup. Controller installed at the transformer, zones programmed, app installed on your phone and connected.
Step 4 — Training. We walk you through the app, set up your first scenes together, and leave a simple cheat sheet. You run it confidently before we leave.
