Winter Is When Lighting Earns Its Keep
Here is the math: in December, it is dark by 5 PM. Your lighting system runs five, six hours a night — more than any other season. Winter is when you live with your lighting. It is also when the landscape is at its barest — which turns out to be an opportunity, not a problem.
What Shines in Winter
Evergreens. The stars of winter lighting. Up-lit hollies, boxwoods, and spruces glow deep green against the dark — rich, saturated color when everything else is gray. If you have evergreens, light them; they carry the whole winter scene.
Bare branch structure. Deciduous trees without leaves reveal their architecture — and up-lighting turns branch structure into sculpture. A bare oak under up-lights is arguably more dramatic than in full leaf.
Hardscape. Walls, steps, and pillars stand out when the plants retreat. Hardscape lighting does its best work in winter.
Entries and walks. Icy months make path and step lighting genuinely important — every tread visible, every icy patch avoidable.
The Holiday Overlap
Winter lighting and holiday lighting are natural partners. Your landscape system provides the elegant base layer — warm facade wash, glowing evergreens — and holiday lights add the festive top layer. Together they make December the best-looking month on your street.
Winter Care
LED systems love cold — low temperatures extend LED life. Just keep heavy snow cleared from low fixtures after big storms so they are not buried, and enjoy the long nights. If a fixture goes out mid-winter, note it — or call us and we will brave the cold with you.
Planning Ahead
Thinking about lighting? Fall is the ideal install season — the system is in and aimed before the long nights arrive. But winter installs work fine too; we install year-round as long as the ground is workable.
