Up-Lighting: Drama From Below

Fixtures at the ground aim up. The effect is bold and theatrical: trunks glow, facades wash, branch structures become sculpture against the night sky. Up-lighting creates presence — it announces. Best for: home facades, specimen trees, columns, walls, and anything you want to show off. See our architectural up-lighting and tree lighting pages.

Down-Lighting: Nature From Above

Fixtures mounted high aim down. The effect is soft and natural: light filters through leaves like moonlight, dapples the ground, and pools gently over patios. Down-lighting creates atmosphere — it envelops. Best for: patios and seating areas under trees, garden beds, lawn areas, and anywhere you want it to feel like a moonlit night, every night.

Head to Head

Mood: up-lighting is dramatic; down-lighting is serene.

Visibility: up-lighting showcases the object itself (the tree, the wall); down-lighting showcases what is below (the patio, the garden).

Installation: up-lighting sits on the ground — easy to install and adjust. Down-lighting mounts in trees or structures — more skilled work, more transformative result.

Glare risk: up-lighting must be aimed carefully to avoid shining into windows or the sky. Down-lighting is naturally glare-free — the source is above eye level, hidden in the canopy.

Best subjects: up-lighting loves architecture and sculptural trees. Down-lighting loves gathering spaces and gardens.

The Designer Answer: Both

The best landscapes use both, in different places. Up-light the front-yard oak for curb-appeal drama. Moonlight the back patio for evening serenity. Wash the facade up, wash the garden down. Contrast between the techniques — bold here, soft there — is what makes a property feel designed rather than decorated. Our design process places each technique where it belongs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better for my front yard?

Usually up-lighting — it gives the curb-appeal drama that makes a home stand out from the street. Facades and front-yard trees are classic up-light subjects.

Which is better for my patio?

Down-lighting, almost always. Moonlighting from overhead trees (or pergola down-lights) creates the soft, natural glow that makes patios inviting.

Can you combine both on one property?

That is the ideal. Most of our full-property designs use up-lighting in front for presence and down-lighting in back for atmosphere.

Is down-lighting harder to install?

It takes more skill — fixtures mount high in trees with proper straps and growth slack. But the effect is unmatched, and we do it routinely.
